Dr. George Adams is known as a scientist, entrepreneur and venture financier. Using his engineering and medical knowledge, he has spent 30 years developing and commercializing discoveries from universities. He obtained his B.A.Sc. and M.A.Sc. in mechanical engineering from the University of Waterloo and a Ph.D. from McMaster University in medical sciences. After a postdoctoral year at the Baylor College of Medicine studying vascular biology, he became a Senior Scientist in the Canadian Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service. In his 6 years at the Red Cross, he developed, patented and licensed to Baxter Laboratories a non-plasma medium for platelet storage. He also participated in the development of a plasma/plateletpheresis machine for blood collections, which is sold worldwide. He left the Red Cross to become the Director of the Artificial Heart Development Program at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and Associate Professor of Biochemistry and Surgery. He was instrumental in structuring a relationship between governments, universities and industry to secure $22-million to fund the EVAD program for the first 5 years. This program continues today as a publicly-traded company, World Heart (NASDAQ-WHRT).

Dr. Adams left the University of Ottawa to develop hematology-related products based on two of his patents with Dupont Canada Inc. In 1993, he became the Vice-President of Corvita Canada, Inc. In 1994, he purchased controlling shares in the company and became President and a Director. He raised funds to continue the company's research program until it was purchased by Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) in 1996 and then re-sold to Boston Scientific Inc. (NYSE:BSX) in 1998. From 1999 to 2004, he was the President and CEO of the University of Toronto Innovations Foundation. From April 2005 to June 2010, he was the CEO of Amorfix Life Sciences Ltd (TSX: AMF). He is presently President and CEO of VentriPoint (TSXV:VPT) and Chairman of the Board for Sernova Corporation (TSXV:SVA).

He has been a founding angel investor in a 7 startup companies in Canada and the United States. He has been instrumental in obtaining venture financing for 26 companies who have raised in excess of $100 million and has been a director of 23 private and public companies including 10 venture capital funds, 10 start-up companies and 2 Centres of Excellence. Dr. Adams has 124 publications including 9 invited reviews, 26 full papers and 3 patents. He is a past President of the Canadian Biomaterials Society. He has been a reviewer for numerous scientific journals, national granting agencies and several national and provincial Centres of Excellence. He has been a principal investigator for over $45 million in private and publicly-funded research and development. In 2007, Dr. Adams was named a Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum and attended the Davos meeting. In 2009, Amorfix Life Sciences Ltd won the “TBI Biotechnology Company of the Year” award.
